ABSTRAKSI: Kenyamanan berkomunikasi melalui media surat elektronik atau email kini sudah sangat berkurang. Salah satu penyebab ketidaknyamanan adalah spam. Dalam komunikasi email, spam dapat di artikan sebagai email yang tidak diinginkan dan tidak pernah diminta, tetapi diterima. Email spam tersebut biasanya dikirimkan oleh seseorang atau suatu server email. Tentu saja hal tersebut sangat mengganggu kenyamanan dalam pengiriman dan penerimaan surat email, disamping itu juga dapat menghabiskan biaya dan termasuk penyalahgunaan wewenang dalam komunikasi internet yang sudah memiliki standar tertentu.
Untuk menghindari email spam tersebut maka dibutuhkan pembuatan suatu email server yang tidak memerlukan banyak biaya, dapat berjalan dengan stabil, serta memiliki komponen lengkap untuk pencegahan email spam. Komponen tersebut adalah SMTP sebagai pengirim pesan, POP3 sebagai pengambil atau penerima pesan, dan IMAP sebagai pengambil pesan yang berbasis web. Pencegahan email spam dilakukan dengan cara mengkonfigurasi secara langsung dengan cara menyaring alamat pengirim yang tidak dikehendaki, atau menyisipkan software tambahan untuk mencegah spam secara otomatis ke dalam software SMTP atau Mail Transfer Agent yang digunakan. Mail Transfer Agent adalah software yang berfungsi untuk menjalankan fungsi SMTP agar dapat bekerja dengan baik. Salah satu Mail Transfer Agent yang terkenal adalah Postfix. Postfix adalah software Mail Transfer Agent yang berjalan di sistem operasi linux. Selain karena lisensi yang gratis, Postfix juga lebih banyak digunakan oleh para administrator karena skalabilitas, ketangguhan, dan memenuhi standar internet SMTP.
Oleh karena itu, untuk memenuhi semua aspek keamanan dalam berkomunikasi melalui email, proyek akhir ini menghadirkan sebuah server email yang menggunakan system operasi Linux Centos 5.4 sebagai sistem operasinya dan menggunakan postfix sebagai program mail transfer agen, serta dilengkapi oleh program Clamav, Spamassassin, dan MailScanner sebagai antivirus dan antispam. Server email ini berhasil mendekteksi sebuah email spam dengan lama proses 2,712974 detik.

To avoid spam emails are then required the creation of a mail server that does not require a lot of costs, can run with the stable, and has a complete component for the prevention of spam email. Components such as sending messages is SMTP, POP3 as the maker or recipient of the message, and IMAP as a web-based maker of messages. Prevention of spam emails do with how to configure filtering directly with the sender address that is not desired, or insert additional software to prevent spam automatically in the software or the SMTP Mail Transfer Agent is used. Furthermore, this email server also be complemented by antivirus and antispam software support to improve the security system.
Therefore, to meet all aspects of security in communicating by email, this project presents an email server that uses the Linux operating system Centos 4.5 as the operating system and using Postfix as a mail transfer agent program, and supplemented by courses Clamav, SpamAssassin and MailScanner as antivirus and antispam.
